A cancer specialist and national co-ordinator,National Cancer Prevention Programme, NCPP,Dr. Kin Egwuonu said the late advertisingpractitioner, May Nzeribe died fromcomplications resulting from a long journey toIndia and not from cancer itself. After analysis, Egwuonu revealed that Nzeribesuffered from thrombosis of the veins, oftendescribed as “economy class syndrome” forairplane, car, or train travel, which causesblood clots to form in the veins. This was thefatal medical problem triggered by hisprolonged sitting during the airplane journey toIndia, where he went to seek treatment. He said Nzeribe did not die as a direct result ofthe prostate cancer which he had battled foryears; rather, he died from multiple organfailure as a result of the long trip.“He went for cancer treatment but ended upwith a bigger problem. When somebody ishaving cancer, the blood thickens and clotseasily and because of this complication fromthe long flight, he developed multiple organfailure. This is why it is not very okay for peoplethat are not very well to undertake such a longjourney.“The complications from the long flight was sosevere that specialists at the Indian hospitalwhere he went for cancer treatment could noteven treat him anymore. They took him to theIntensive Care Unit and the Indian doctorswanted to bring him back to Nigeria, but hedied there.”
